Festival WarsawByArt 2019

WarsawByArt 2019

For the third time, we are given the opportunity to participate in WarsawByArt, a cultural event that takes place yearly in the capital. WarsawByArt was created on the initiative of the owners and curators of the Warsaw art galleries with active participation of people involved in shaping the image and content of contemporary Polish culture. Both private galleries and social galleries as well as institutions related to the cultural life of the capital take part in it. Our common goal is broadly understood promotion of contemporary art and building the image of the capital as a culturally rich metropolis and strengthening its competitiveness in Europe. WarsawByArt has proved that there is a platform for the presentation of an immensely diverse artistic offer in the capital - a model of cooperation of institutions that are competitive from the market point of view has also been developed. WarsawByArt is in its assumption an open project whose goal is to be part of a permanent calendar of cultural events in Warsaw. We believe that just like during the first edition, our initiative will prove to be interesting to gallery visitors and art lovers. We are joining forces in order to contribute to a significant enrichment of the Warsaw cultural offer. We hope that the encounters that take place this year, will result in lasting friendships and the need to learn about the new artistic phenomena presented in galleries throughout the year. Welcome!

Exhibitions WarsawByArt 2019

In the Jungle

The exhibition takes us to a hot tropical forest, in lush treetops and puts us face to face with large tiger pythons. The lush grasses, the huge, meandering snakes and woven from the leaves will perfectly reflect the dynamics and mystery of wild nature. The exhibition includes: Aleksandra Brodzińska, Chang Bui, Zuza Gaszyńska, Magdalena Giesek, Kamil Jakóbczak, Zuzanna Jankowska, Bartek Jarmoliński, Paweł Kałużyński, Lech Kolasiński, Juliusz Kosin, Patrycja Kruszyńska-Mikulska, Katarzyna Kukuła, Filip Moszant, Agnieszka Potrzebnicka, Marta Puchałowska, Andrzej Roszczak, Joanna Roszkowska, natalia Rybka, Margarita Staszulonek, Anna Szczurek, Magdalena Szilke, Monika Talarek, Agnieszka Zabrodzka, Agnieszka Zawisza.
Westerly, the exhibition Galeria Monumental is now bringing to Apteka Sztuki and the WarsawByArt Festival, shows recent work of five Portuguese artists – Mimi Tavares, Alexandre Simões, António Melo, Manuel San-Payo and Luís Brilhante – and aims to give, from the angle of an artist curated gallery, a small but significant panorama of what is being done in this westerly point of Europe.

Stanisław Baj – Light and Water

The exhibition presents the painting cycles of an outstanding artist, on whom Stanisław Baj moves the river as if in a different dimension. The leading stream of the river becomes light, it is real and it’s already beating its own, one would like to say mystical splendor. The artist’s fascination with light distances the banks of the Bug from each other, the river becomes more and more an abstract creation, a platform for luminous layers, an arena of light with dark, spirit with matter.

Seeing Sounds, Feeling Freedom

The exhibition pays a visual tribute to the Warsaw Autumn festival, one of the most important festivals of contemporary music in Europe. The presented works do not illustrate the music, but they relate to sound in a more abstract way. The video Freedom is Fragments by the Austrian duet Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond tells us about some of the essential factors in music: freedom, improvisation and time. The paintings by Maess Anand take a fully visual approach in which the artist reflects on, freely explores and is inspired by the music of Witold Lutoslawski – a composer who is very close to her artistic practice and musical sensibility.

Eugeniusz Gerlach – Between Line and Color

Eugeniusz Gerlach’s painting is deeply immersed in the artistic search of the European and Polish avant-garde from the first decades of the 20th century. It is a completely autonomous and original statement by the artist, which seems to be primarily a pretext for creating a discourse between painting values, means and goals. This exhibition clearly confirms that art is an area where the classic operation of the multiplication table does not have to bring the results we are used to, an area where the paradox is beautiful and interesting.

Jan Astner – Tranquilidad

Tranquilidad in Spanish means “calm”, “peace of mind”, “harmony”. A fourth state of consciousness discovered some time ago, which is manifested by increased intensity of alpha waves in the central and anterior parts of the brain. This state is referred to as transcendental, because it gives a sense of internal harmony. Jan Astner introduces us to a world of transparent scarves floating in space with muted gas colors. Sensual synesthesia takes place in it. The colors smell of cinnamon, nutmeg and orange peel. Viewers are happy to immerse themselves in contemplation, adding to the images woven by their own imaginations.

Popielarczyk – Continuation

Paintings of Władysław Popielarczyk, whose apogee of the fall was in the last third of the 20th century, Skarbnica Sztuki presented in 2019, during the simultaneous exhibition „Pierwsi Barbakańczycy” organized in cooperation with the Wolskie Centrum Kultury. Since then, our collection of the artist’s works has grown significantly. This time, however, in addition to the cross-section of his work, we will also present paintings of his daughter – Barbara Popielarczyk-Daszewska and granddaughter – Dominika Daszewska. So it will be a „continuation” in two ways. What’s more, the granddaughter of the artist will tell guests about his grandfather’s painting and cultivating art in the family (curatorial guided tour).

Maciej Sieńczyk – How is an artwork formed?

Maciej Sieńczyk’s exhibition will introduce our guests to works of art made to order as illustrations for the book, The Revenge of Jeżozwierz. We will present a unique series of fine art prints from this book, which are a decisive element of the success of this publishing house. The exhibition will be complemented by the latest drawings, in part created especially for this exhibition. Such presentations are rare, we wish to fulfill the dreams of lovers of the artist’s creativity and we encourage you to meet the author and his works.

Vertically and Horizontally

The works which we will see at the exhibition are a continuation of considerations about the mutual relations between the space and the matter. The theme of destruction featuring in the works of Anna Michniewicz will this time be represented by tarnished zinc sheets. The artist has paired them with the ephemeral textures of transparent interfacing thus creating surprising, unobvious spaces. A symbolic reference to textile will be made by using spools and balls of thread (the base on which all woven materials are created).

Kazimierz Podsadecki – Between Abstraction and Figuration

Kazimierz Podsadecki – Artist related with the magazine “Zwrotnica” and the generation of the interwar avant-garde, fascinated by cubism, abstract painting and photomontage. After the war, in his work you can see geometric forms together with painters tradition. In some of presented drawings from the years 1950-60 his dynamic line creates vibrant, half-abstract landscapes. In others a femele nude emerges from the loose plastic shape. There are also works strongly referring to the cubism tradition.
In the Korekta Gallery, an exhibition of works by group A.2 artists A2 is a group of Polish artists who met each other at open air events organized by dr. Bożena Kowalska. What they have in common is the language of geometric abstraction and friendship. The name of the group came from the highway running from east to west. The exhibition in the Korekta gallery is officially the first joint exhibition of artists as the group A2 (Mateusz Dąbrowski, Karolina Hałatek, Dariusz Mlącki, Daniel Cyblski, Tomasz Saciłowski, Tamara Berdowska, Leszek Opsządek, Michał Misiak, Łukasz Leszczyński, Karolina Jaklewicz, Olga Ząbroń.

Summer is not over yet

Hungarian contemporary artist, Árpád Forgó, is present in the Warsaw art scene since 2011. “Summer is not over yet” is his third solo show at Milano Gallery, introducing recently made grid-based, shaped canvas works. These object-like spatial pieces embody the concept of the void opposed to the volume. Pollock-Krasner Foundation grantee, recently participated in the studio program of The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in the USA.

Władysław Jackiewicz – Body Language

Most of our communication takes place in the non-verbal sphere. It should be to her among others body language, the meaning of which is supposedly more important than spoken words. Painting is also the same: a message that it avoids language, goes straight to the viewer. Władysław Jackiewicz (included in the so-called classics contemporary) in semi-abstract canvases presented at the exhibition, addresses both these issues at the same time. In the paintings of the artist from Gdańsk, the body and painting exchange the roles of the subject and the message carrier.

Ewelina Kołakowska – Interludium / Niente

The main theme of Ewelina Kołakowska’s consistently black and white painting style and graphic compositions is the naked human body, with the help of which the artist talks about desire, discontentment and the eternally unsatisfied longing for closeness. In Ewelina Kołakowska’s latest, emotional canvases, the faces contorted in grimaces and, masterfully developed, slender hands of the presented figures (which are de facto carriers of the work’s content, interpretative signs for the viewer) are particularly important. The paintings are accompanied by a series of groundbreaking graphics, in which the artist explores the issue of the medium, creating the first prints in history of gravure printing plates designed and printed in 3D printing technology, which is the subject of the artist’s doctoral dissertation. The exhibition is open till 22.09.2019.

Majid Jammoul – My Space

The prepared presentation is a retrospective exhibition of the Polish-Syrian artist Majid Jammoul, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1975. We meet here with his personal space-time, expressed primarily through the abstract form. According to the author, the essence of his sculptural activity is creation a linear sculpture that develops in space and time, creating a diagram of thoughts and feelings. Majid Jammoul draws a handful of Arabic art and tradition (calligraphy), passing on universal content that is close to every European in his works. In his work he obtained a total symbiosis of East and West culture, proving the universal role of the language of world art. At the exhibition we will see sculptures, drawings and medals.

László Miklosvits – SYZYF in Warsaw

The exhibition is a retrospective of the Hungarian graphic artist and painter László Miklosvits (born in 1944). He is a famous book designer. He illustrated the books by Gyula Krúdy, Sándor Márai, Kálmán Mikszáth and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. His work ranges from precise, concentrated expressions that are purified to a few lines to finely and meticulously elaborated drawings, unique symbolic graphics operated with monumental positive-negative forms, and prints adapting different techniques. “His art is characterized by brilliant drawing skills, the meticulous elaboration of the surface and the concise expression of essence at the same time.”

Jan Lebenstein – Capriccia

The exhibition focus is the relationship between sexes, woman and man emerging from Lebenstein’s bestiary. The works show a strictly defined relationship model in which the feminine factor is dominant and expressive and the masculine subordinate being animalized. This imbalance outlined implies a sadomasochistic game, emphasized by the duality of presentations: body and skeleton, human attitudes and animal attributes. The relation: lady - slave clothed in a Baroque antourage - gives one a timeless fantasy about relationships.

Katarzyna Haber – Memoirs

Essentially, drawing is a very intimate medium. It is often a quick note, snapshot recording the moment. A set of works by Katarzyna Haber registers images from the immediate surroundings. The transience of memories enclosed in “Memoirs” takes them into a timeless dimension. The style of her work is immediately mature and recognizable. Drawings created with a bold line evoke associations with Matisses or Józef Czapski’s notes, but they are completely free from any gaze on another artist. Katarzyna Haber, draws her children, interior of the apartment, shoes and other close motives. She manifests her freedom from all restrictions. They are not memoirs of a bored housewife, but rather a feminist manifesto.
